Wisconsin Poverty Report

Poverty rate up in 2011, UW institute reports, By Coral Garnick, June 20, 2013, Milwaukee Journal Sentinel: “More Wisconsin residents were living in poverty — including one in eight children — according to a new report that accounts for both family income and government assistance programs. The overall poverty rate rose from 10.3% in 2010 to 10.7% in 2011, according to the fifth Wisconsin Poverty Report. The child poverty rate rose from 10.8% to 12.2%, which the report called ‘a significant increase…'”

May 2013 State Unemployment Rates

Steady hiring pushes down unemployment rates in half of U.S. states, Associated Press, June 21, 2013, Toledo Blade: “Unemployment rates fell in half of U.S. states last month, led by drops in California, West Virginia, New York and Hawaii. The Labor Department said today that unemployment rates rose in 17 states and were unchanged in eight. Hiring has been steady nationwide, leading to a better job market in many areas of the country. Employers added jobs in 33 states last month. The biggest gains were in Ohio, Texas and Michigan…”

House defeats a farm bill with big food stamp cuts, By Ron Nixon, June 20, 2013, New York Times: “Opposition by Democrats to huge cuts in the food stamp program helped lead to the defeat of the House farm bill on Thursday, raising questions about financing for the nation’s farm and nutrition programs this year. The vote, which was 234 to 195 to defeat it, came a year after House leaders refused to bring the five-year, $940 billion measure to the floor because conservative lawmakers who wanted deeper cuts in the food stamp program would not support it…”
