States and Medicaid Expansion

  • Corbett facing pressure from GOP on Medicaid, By Amy Worden, February 28, 2013, Philadelphia Inquirer: “The pressure on Gov. Corbett to expand the state’s Medicaid rolls is no longer only geographic; it’s now coming from within his own party. First there was Gov. Christie’s announcement Tuesday that New Jersey would join other Pennsylvania neighbors – New York, Maryland, and Ohio – by opting in on the Medicaid expansion made available to all states under the Affordable Care Act. Now the heat is coming from some of Corbett’s fellow Republicans in the state legislature…”
  • Nebraska lawmakers consider expanding Medicaid, By Alissa Skelton (AP), February 28, 2013, San Francisco Chronicle: “Health care advocates urged Nebraska lawmakers on Thursday to expand Medicaid coverage as part of the federal health care law, while the state’s Medicaid chief says the program is too expensive. Supporters, many of them from the health care industry, testified before the Legislature’s Health and Human Services Committee. They argued that expanding Medicaid to an estimated 55,000 newly eligible Nebraskans would allow the federal government to cover long-term health care costs and reduce the financial burden on taxpayers and hospitals…”

Child Welfare Reform – Colorado

Colorado Gov. Hickenlooper details $22.1 million in requests to improve child protection, By Christopher N. Osher and Jennifer Brown, February 27, 2013, Denver Post: “Colorado lacks sufficient data to know whether there are enough child protection workers in the state, and only three counties have invested in mobile technology that would make those workers more efficient, according to $22.1 million in budget requests from Gov. John Hickenlooper. The state also needs a child abuse hotline in part because confusion exists in rural areas over how to handle such calls after hours, the documents show. And Colorado has lacked uniform rules for screening reports of child abuse and neglect, officials acknowledge in the documents…”

Euro Zone Unemployment

Euro zone unemployment rises to record, By David Jolly, March 1, 2013, New York Times: “The unemployment rate in the euro zone edged up in January to a new record, official data showed Friday, as the ailing European economy continued to weigh on the job market. That, and new data showing a decline in inflation in the euro zone, could prompt the European Central Bank to take steps to stimulate the economy when its Governing Council meets this week, analysts said…”
