IRS encourages people to apply for earned income tax credit, By Rachel McGrath, January 27, 2012, Ventura County Star: “The Internal Revenue Service is urging low- to middle-income earners in Ventura County to find out whether they qualify for a tax credit that could put thousands of dollars into their pockets. The earned income tax credit is intended to help those who work hard but don’t make much money, reporters were told Friday by Verlinda Paul of the IRS. An estimated one in five workers nationwide fail to claim the credit. One of the main reasons Americans don’t apply for the credit is because they don’t know about it, Paul said.
